New Delhi [India], September 30 (ANI): Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) & Safdarjung Hospital have successfully performed their first Dual Kidney Transplant, marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s Kidney Transplant Programme on Tuesday.
Under the leadership of Director, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, Dr. Kavita Sharma, the hospital continues to add new milestones in the field of advanced and specialised healthcare. The successful completion of this complex Dual Kidney Transplant is yet another feather in the cap for VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital.
The procedure was facilitated with the support of Medical Superintendent, Dr. Charu Bamba, ensuring the necessary institutional support and guidance and support for this complex multidisciplinary transplant, a release said.
The significance of the procedure lies in the utilisation of kidneys from a marginal donor. On the night of 19 September 2026, a 62-year-old man was declared brain dead at Command Hospital, Chandimandir. His family took the courageous decision to donate his organs.
However, owing to the donor’s age and other medical considerations, the donor was categorised as a marginal donor. In such a situation, transplantation of a single kidney may not provide the desired clinical benefit to the recipient. At the same time, the continuing shortage of donor organs makes optimal utilisation of every suitable donated organ particularly important.
Following an assessment, the transplant team at Safdarjung Hospital, after considering the potential risks and benefits and with the informed consent of the recipient’s family, decided to undertake Dual Kidney Transplantation, whereby both kidneys from the same donor were transplanted into a single recipient.
The decision represents a carefully considered approach to expanding the utilisation of available donor organs, particularly in the context of the substantial gap between the number of patients requiring kidney transplantation and the availability of suitable donor organs.
Since organ retrieval and transplantation are highly time-sensitive, the Indian Air Force (Western Command) provided essential logistical support and facilitated the airlifting and transportation of the retrieved organs to Delhi. The liver was allocated to Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi, while the kidneys were transferred to Safdarjung Hospital, the release said.
The Dual Kidney Transplantation was successfully performed by a multidisciplinary team led by Director Professor & HOD, Department of Urology and Renal Transplant, Dr. Pawan Vasudeva, along with Dr. Niraj Kumar, Dr. Sandeep Kumar and Dr. Gaurav Vashisht.
The successful Dual Kidney Transplantation marks an important step forward in the Kidney Transplant Programme at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital. In an era of acute organ shortage, carefully considered approaches to the utilisation of available donor organs can help expand opportunities for kidney transplantation and provide hope to patients who remain dependent on dialysis while awaiting transplantation.
