Police seize 28 kg of illegally stored calcium carbide in Jabalpur ahead of Diwali

Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh) [India], October 30 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh police seized around 28 kg of illegally stored calcium carbide from a shop in Jabalpur district ahead of Diwali, despite a district administration order prohibiting its sale and storage, a police officer said on Friday.
The action was taken at the shop located under the jurisdiction of Madan Mahal police station in the district as a precautionary measure in view of the reports of injuries caused by the use of calcium carbide guns during Diwali celebrations in previous years.
Madan Mahal police station in-charge Umesh Yadav said that the shop owner failed to produce valid documents regarding the storage of the material and a case was registered under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in the matter.
“In previous years, during Diwali celebrations in various districts, several people sustained injuries to their eyes and faces due to the use of calcium carbide guns. Keeping this in view, the District Collector issued an order on October 17, 2026, prohibiting the storage of materials used in calcium carbide guns and ensuring legal action against anyone found violating the order. Today, around 28 kg of calcium carbide was found illegally stored at a shop here. The material was seized as per the law, a case was registered under section 223 of BNS, and further action was underway,” Yadav said.
The officer further said, “The shopkeeper could not produce any valid documents to justify the storage of the material. He, however, claimed that he dealt in welding materials and had stocked calcium carbide for use in welding equipment. During preliminary inquiry, he stated that he had purchased the material from Indore.”
Further investigation is underway, and action will be taken based on the findings, he added. (ANI)
