Madurai (Tamil Nadu) [India], September 16 (ANI): The 12 Gopurams of the historic Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai were adorned with colourful flower garlands weighing around five tonnes on Tuesday, ahead of the temple's consecration ceremony scheduled for September 17.
The elaborate flower garlands, meant to decorate all 12 gopurams, including the golden vimanas of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar and the eastern, western, northern and southern Rajagopurams, were prepared over the past two days in the Puthumandapam area, with artisans and workers putting in sustained effort to complete the intricate decorative work ahead of the ceremony.
The grand garlands ranged from around 40 feet to 122 feet in length, reflecting the scale and grandeur associated with the temple's traditions and the significance of the upcoming consecration.
The Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of the most revered and architecturally significant temples in South India, dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, and her consort Lord Sundareswarar, a form of Lord Shiva. The temple is renowned for its towering, intricately carved gopurams, some of which rise several storeys high and are adorned with thousands of colourful sculptures depicting deities, mythical creatures and stories from Hindu scriptures. It stands as one of the finest examples of Dravidian temple architecture and remains a major centre of pilgrimage and cultural heritage in Tamil Nadu, drawing devotees and tourists from across the world through the year.
Before the garlands were taken to the tops of the towering gopurams, the team offered a flower garland to Vallabha Vinayagar at the Ashta Shakti Mandapam near the entrance of the Amman shrine and performed special prayers, in keeping with customary rituals observed ahead of such significant temple ceremonies. The team later offered prayers at the Sri Maha Muneeswarar Temple near the northern gopuram before proceeding with the decoration work.
The first garland was then lifted towards the top of the Eastern Rajagopuram. The garlands were transported from Puthumandapam to the respective gopuram areas, where more than 50 workers were involved in adorning the nine-tiered Eastern Rajagopuram alone, underlining the scale of manpower and coordination involved in the exercise.
